How things appear to us is completely determined by our own level of mind.

In accordance with different levels of mind, there are different worlds, different views. We should be aware of this and not think that the view we have, what we see, is the only way the objects; we should not think that this is how the people, place, statues and so forth actually exist.

造塔功德

古印度时,摩竭陀国内有一人名叫迦罗越,发心供养二万位比丘长达一年的时间,连阿育王都耳闻他虔心供僧的善名。

于是,阿育王召见迦罗越,问他:“听说你十分富有,想必家中一定有众多珍奇宝物。”

迦罗越回答:“报告大王,我家中并无宝物!”

阿育王不相信他的话,便把迦罗越留下来,派人到他家中勘察。使者看到迦罗越所住的房舍非常广大,黄金、琉璃等七宝装饰其中,华丽富贵更胜皇宫,就连家中的妇女也都个个仪表庄严,胜于宫中之女。但是,他到处察看,却见不到任何谷物、布帛、钱财及珍宝等。

使者回到皇宫,将所见据实禀报国王,国王听了以后,知道迦罗越必是一位大福报者。此时,迦罗越笑着问阿育王:“大王,您一定不太相信吧!”即以手指向东方,空中立刻降下七宝雨;再指向南方,也同样落下七宝雨,无有止息。国王看到这个情景非常惊奇,随后便让迦罗越返家。

皇宫距离精舍不远,国王立刻动身前往,向比丘们虔诚作礼,恭敬请示:“迦罗越作何福德,能够随心满愿,珍宝自然涌现呢?”

上座比丘为国王开示:“惟卫佛时,有四个人共同造立佛塔,其中一人发了殷勤恳切的心,在塔寺造立完成后,又以七宝及鲜花供于塔顶,从四面撒下,并发愿:‘愿生生世世享大福报,无有匮乏!’

这位虔心供养者就是迦罗越。由于发心造塔和供养的功德,他在过去九十一劫中,不堕恶道,常生天上、人间,富贵常乐。”国王听了,生大欢喜心,立即发心布施供养,虔诚恭敬护法护教。

When Anger Arises

Q: How about anger? What should I do when I feel anger arising?

Answer: You must use loving-kindness. When angry states of mind arise in meditation, balance them by developing feelings of loving-kindness. If someone does something bad or gets angry, don't get angry yourself. If you do, you are being more ignorant than they. Be wise. Keep in mind compassion, for that person is suffering. Fill your mind with loving-kindness as if he were a dear brother. Concentrate on the feeling of loving-kindness as a meditation subject. Spread it to all beings in the world. Only through loving-kindness is hatred overcome.

Sometimes you may see other monks behaving badly. You may get annoyed. This is suffering unnecessarily. It is not yet our Dhamma. You may think like this: "He is not as strict as I am. They are not serious meditators like us. Those monks are not good monks."; This is a great defilement on your part. Do not make comparisons. Do not discriminate. Let go of your opinion as watch your opinions and watch yourself. This is our Dhamma. You can't possibly make everyone act as you wish or be like you. This wish will only make you suffer. It is a common mistake for meditators to make, but watching other people won't develop wisdom. Simply examine yourself,your feelings. This is how you will understand.

Offering to Buddha

Offering one tiny flower to a statue or picture of Buddha receives immeasurable, limitless, merit. All the paths to happiness result from that. With just one grain of rice or one tiny flower, you can enter the path and achieve total enlightenment—the completion of all good qualities.

无常四大山

昔日,佛陀在舍卫国祇树给孤独园,一天中午,波斯匿王忽然带着几名随从,风尘仆仆地驱车来到精舍。

佛陀问国王:“日正当中,大王为何风尘仆仆,特地前来?”

波斯匿王回答:“世尊,正因为国事繁忙,日日殚心竭虑文韬武略,好不心烦,所以政事处理暂告一段落,便赶来顶礼问讯。请原谅弟子一身尘劳、没有沐浴净身,就冒冒失失地来了。”

佛陀丝毫不以为意,待波斯匿王坐定后,问波斯匿王:“大王,您一向勤于治国,如果今天有一位众所崇敬的长者从东方来,向大王报告,现今东方出现了一座高耸入云的大石山,而且不断从地底下隆起,一步步地向舍卫国逼近,沿途所有草木鸟兽惊惶逃窜,死伤无数……;不久之后,南方、北方、西方也纷纷有贤者赶来通报,一座座难以想像的巨石山正从四面八方移动而来……。请问,此时身为一国之主的您,如何使人民幸免于难呢?”

波斯匿王思考了一会儿,说:“四方都有大石山铺天盖地而来,能往哪里逃呢?这时,唯有深信佛法、依法修行,别无他计了。”

佛陀笑意更深了,问:“大王,如您所说,深信佛法是唯一生存之道,为何您如此肯定?”

波斯匿王恭谨地回答:“世尊,所谓‘养兵千日,用在一时’,但是四大山刹那间就能吞噬大地,纵使派出所有训练有素的象兵、马兵、车兵、步兵,个个配备精良、严阵以待,无异螳臂当车吧!那些刀、箭、弓、矟,有什么用呢?不过是以卵击石罢了。若武力不足以保家卫国,那么,咒术或国库所蓄积的金银财宝更有用吗?我能够大开宝库、舍一切世间最珍贵的宝藏,与无情、无常谈判、作交易吗?唉,忝为一国之君,见天下生民涂炭,又能向谁讨一个公道呢?因此,此时唯一能做的就是一心一意勤修善法,这念心定慧等持,洞破外在的世界本是成住坏空,乃至一切有情,皆是四大假合、虚妄不实,无可执着,才能不受外在的无常所逼迫。所以,无常到来时,唯有深信佛法才有办法。”

佛陀赞许波斯匿王:“是啊,世间无常譬如这四大山,老山能朽坏壮年盛色,病山能摧坏一切强健,死山能劫夺一切寿命,衰灭山能损坏一切荣华富贵,乃至妻离子别、骨肉分散、钱财亡失。大王,这四大山日复一日紧随着人们,谁能抵挡得了?诚如您所言,唯有安住在佛法的正知正见,如实修行,这念心超越了相对的时间、空间,安住在不生不灭的本心本性上,就是究竟离苦得乐的净土世界,才能脱离无常逼迫之苦。您能体会到真正的安邦治国之道,护法护教助转法轮,这真是国家人民无上的福报啊!”于是说了一首偈语:


譬如四方有大山,广大深厚无涯际,
从四面来一时至,慞惶奔走无避处,
象车马兵不能拒,咒术财宝不能却,
如是大王无常山,老病死山衰灭山,
残灭一切有生类,刹利首陀婆罗门,
乃至下贱真陀罗,在家出家修梵行,
及以全戒至毁禁,悉皆残灭无遗余。
是以智人应修善,尊崇三宝行众福,
身口及意常清净,现得名誉后生天。”

波斯匿王明白了自利利他的菩萨修行之道,正是追求长治久安之钥,也是每个人的安心立命良方,法喜充满地顶礼赞叹,信受奉行。

Collecting More Good Karma

Bad and good depend on the individual person's interpretation. In general, if you are able to spend your life collecting more virtue and less negative karma, that's a good life. Spending even one quarter of the day creating good karma is better than spending the whole 24 hours creating only negative karma. So today, if you are able to create more virtue than negative karma, that's a good life.

Dedicating Merit

The Buddha said that when we dedicate merit, it is like adding a drop of water to the ocean. Just as a drop of water added to the ocean will not dry up but will exist as long as the ocean itself exists, so, too, if we dedicate the merit of any virtuous deed, it merges with the vast ocean of merit that endures until enlightenment.

用智慧观察

佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园弘法时,波斯匿王前往顶礼佛陀。当时,园中还有长发梵志、裸形外道及一衣外道,七人身形都很高大。波斯匿王看到这些外道,便一一向外道们恭敬合掌地自我介绍。

佛问波斯匿王:“大王,你为何对长发、裸形及一衣这些外道如此恭敬呢?”

波斯匿王回答:“世尊!他们是最殊胜难得的阿罗汉啊!”

佛告诉波斯匿王:“你无法知道他们的心靠在哪里,又怎能判断他们是不是阿罗汉呢?如果经过长期相处,仔细观察,才能够真正了解他们。而是否持戒清净,也唯有有智慧的人才能知道,愚痴之人就算和他们长久相处,也无法看清楚。再者,若是遇到他的父母、亲眷往生,也可从他们的反应中看出实际行持,如果没有这些因缘,是很难明白了解的。如果遇到困厄、危难,为人逼迫杀害众生或和女人行淫,还能够不犯戒,才知道他们的道心、修持非常坚定。修行的程度,必须透过每个因缘的逐步观察,才知道他们的梵行是否清净。再者,如果想知道他们是不是智者,一样需要有智慧才能够分别他们所说的真假!只有有智之人才可以在长期观察下,清楚明白地判断!”

波斯匿王听完佛陀的开示,欢喜赞叹:“大智慧的世尊!如同佛所说,要长时间相处、观察,才能够知道是持戒清净、还是破戒之人。遇难缘时所表现出的行为,才知道他们是否道心坚固;听他们讲说议论,才能分别他们是凡是圣。这些要长久相处且有智者才能如实分别,愚痴之人是无法辨别,也非一朝一夕就能妄下定论。为什么我会这么说呢?我曾派遣使者至其他国家中,不但穿着当地服装,亦观察其风俗民情,经过八到十个月的时间,完成种种交代的事情回国后,这些使者的五欲烦恼和习气乃至行为,都和出使前一样,没有任何改变,并不会因为换了装扮而有不同,可见不能只凭相貌就妄作评断。由此得知,佛陀所说是真实不虚的道理!”

波斯匿王又说:“世尊!我虽已知这样的道理,但一看到他们的外相,还是会不懂得加以观察,立即恭敬起迎。”

世尊便为大众说偈:


不以见色貌,而可观察知,
若卒见人时,不可即便信。
相貌似罗汉,实不摄诸根,
形貌种种行,都不可分别。
如似涂耳铛,亦复如涂钱,
愚者谓是金,其内实是铜。
如是诸人等,痴闇无所知,
外相似贤善,内心实毒恶。
行时多将从,表于贤胜者。”

比丘们听闻佛的开示,欢喜赞叹,并依教奉行。

人的质量

一滴墨汁落在一杯清水里,这杯水就会被染污;一滴墨汁融在大海里,大海依然是蔚蓝色的大海。为什么?因为两者的肚量不一样。不熟的麦穗直刺刺地向上挺着,成熟的麦穗低垂着头。为什么?因为两者的份量不一样。——包容别人,就是肚量;谦卑自己,就是份量;合起来,就是一个人的质量。

四念处

佛陀刚成道证果时,独自在优楼频螺聚落尼连河边的菩提树下,静坐沉思,心中想着:“在这世上唯有一个法门,能令众生的心清净,并且远离种种痛苦烦恼;同时,能灭除众生所有不良善的行为,获得正法利益,这个法门就是四念处。什么是四念处呢?身念处,观身不净;受念处,观受是苦;心念处,观心无常;法念处,观法无我。”

“如果一个人不知道修持四念处观,就会远离成圣成贤的法门,与圣道渐行渐远;如果与圣道渐行渐远,就会与甘露法门愈行愈远;如果与甘露法愈行愈远,就免不了遭受生、老、病、死种种忧悲苦恼。相反地,若能修持四念处观,就能亲近成贤成圣的法门,受此甘露法门的薰陶,也就能避开生、老、病、死的种种忧悲苦恼,究竟离苦得乐。”

此时,大梵天王以天耳听到如来的心声,满心欢喜地想:“我应当前往赞叹佛陀的体悟。”

瞬间,他已来到佛陀面前,恭敬顶礼后说道:“世尊,诚如您所体悟,四念处观确实能净化众生,远离种种忧悲苦恼。四念处观是行者精勤用功的下手处,好比白鹤腾空,一飞即逝,修持此法门得以速成佛道。所有人天导师应当以此觉悟之道,持续不断地为众生开示,使其都能听闻知晓,悲悯济拔一切有情。”

天王进一步表示:“过去一切诸佛,因此法门而能得度;未来、现在一切诸佛,也将因此法门得度。度过什么呢?度过生死烦恼瀑流,必须将烦恼妄想一一降伏、调伏,使身口意三业清净,才能达到究竟的解脱、清凉、自在。世间人常在生死轮回之中,唯有明眼人具足智慧,能洞悉十八界种种虚妄,并且宣扬这四念处观的法门。”

天王赞叹:“譬如恒河奔流入海,四念处观也是如此,依此圣道,归流、趣向甘露大海。世尊出现于世,为众生开示所证之法与调伏之事,依四念处观,转妙法轮,普愿一切人天皆能度过老、病、死、苦之流。”

大梵天王再三礼敬佛陀后,法喜充满地离去。

When Lust Arises

Q: How can we overcome lust in our practice? Sometimes I feel as if I am a slave to my sexual desire.

Answer: Lust should be balanced by contemplation of loathesomeness. Attachment to bodily form is one extreme and one should keep in mind the opposite. Examine the body as a corpse and see the process of decay or think of the parts of the body such as the lungs, spleen, fat, feces, and so forth. Remember these and visualize this loathesome aspect of the body when lust arises. This will free you from lust.

Compassion and Right View

Two very, very basic Buddhist realizations; compassion and right view. Lama Tsongkhapa said that if you only have the realization of emptiness you can’t achieve enlightenment, but if there’s compassion then it’s possible to achieve enlightenment. So these two are very, very important..without compassion you cannot achieve enlightenment.

守住六根

昔日,佛陀住在王舍城迦兰陀竹园时,告诉比丘们:“在大雪山里,冰天雪地险峻之处都没有猿猴的踪迹,更何况是人。而另一座山里,则住着猿猴,没有人的踪影。还有一座山中,则是人、猴共同居住。”

“在这座人猿共居的山里,猎人们将树皮捣碎调制成黏胶涂在草上,有智慧的猿猴会避而远之,愚痴的猿猴则不知要远离,会先以一手触摸,结果手便黏在草上;想用另一只手将草移开,没想到两只手都黏在上面;接着又想用双脚来挣脱困境,两只脚也黏了上去;最后想用牙齿将草咬掉,结果连嘴巴都黏住了。猿猴身体的五个部位全被胶黏在一起,蜷曲在地爬不起来。到了此时,猎人不费吹灰之力即能将其捕获,再以木杖串起,背于肩上离去。”

“比丘们,你们要知道,愚痴的猿猴舍离自己及父母所居住的地方,到其他地方游玩,才会有这样的痛苦烦恼。所以,比丘若是没有智慧,选择住在喧闹的聚落,早上着衣持钵到村内乞食,不知道要善护身业,守住六根,眼睛看到外面的色尘,便会心生染着;乃至耳听声音、鼻子闻香、舌尝味道、身体所触皆会起染着之心。缺乏智慧,眼、耳、鼻、舌、身五根会被外境所缚捉,为其左右。所以你们应当学习,不要随着别的处所及境界而去,依止在身念处──观身不净、受念处──观受是苦、心念处──观心无常、法念处──观法无我。”

比丘们聆听佛陀教诲后,个个法喜充满,依教奉行。

Inner peace is the key. If you have inner peace, the external problems do not affect your deep sense of peace and tranquility.

Empty Echoes

If you are the target of some harsh criticism or insulting talk, for example, the harder you try to avoid being exposed to it, the more of it you seem to hear.

The best thing would be to be like the great sages of the past, who felt neither upset when criticised, nor pleased when praised, because they were able to perceive all sounds as empty echoes, and to hear all criticism and praise about themselves just as though people were speaking about a person who had died long ago.

善说法要与默然寂静

过去,佛陀于舍卫国祇树给孤独园弘法度众。当时,毗舍佉比丘于讲堂中为许多比丘说法,不仅言辞流畅,妙语如珠,且将义理发挥得淋漓尽致,能令闻者心生法喜,意解心开,与会大众聆听开示后,皆欢喜踊跃,虔诚供养。因为毗舍佉比丘说法之心十分清净,不为利养、不求声名,且辩才无碍,故能令闻者深生信解,忆持不忘。

当时,有许多比丘来到佛所,至诚顶礼佛足后,禀告佛陀:“毗舍佉比丘在讲堂为大众说法,不求名闻利养,且所说之法契合义理,辩才无碍,能令听闻者忆持不忘。”佛陀欲见毗舍佉比丘,比丘们即去请毗舍佉比丘前来。

毗舍佉比丘来到佛所,至诚顶礼佛足后即于一旁站立,恭敬合掌。佛问毗舍佉比丘:“你是否为比丘们说法,使其一心专注,听而不厌呢?”

毗舍佉比丘回答:“是的。”

佛即赞叹毗舍佉比丘:“你能发自内心真诚、清净地布施法要,不为名闻利养,所说之法圆融无碍、契合义理,能让听法者生起敬信之心,欢喜纳受,真的非常好。自今以后,应常如是说法,利乐有情。”

佛陀进而对众多比丘开示:“你们于修行中,应依此二原则来行持:第一、愿能善说法要。第二、若不能善说法要,则当默然寂静,不得论说世间俗事。莫轻忽默然寂静,能寂静定心者,能有殊胜功德。”接着,佛陀说了一首偈语:


若诸大众中,愚智共聚集,
若未有所说,人则不别知。
若有所显说,然后乃别知,
是故汝今者,常应说法要。
炽然于法炬,竖立先圣幢,
诸阿罗汉等,咸妙法为幢,
诸先胜人等,以善语为幢。”

比丘们聆听佛陀教诲后,个个法喜充满,依教奉行。

说人是非,伤人伤己,好话要多说,是非不要提。

Practice and See for Yourself

Q: You have said that samatha and vipassana or concentration and insight are the same. Could you explain this further?

Answer: It is quite simple. Concentration (samatha) and wisdom (vipassana) work together. First the mind becomes still by holding on to a meditation object. It is quiet only while you are sitting with your eyes closed. This is samatha and eventually this samadhi-base is the cause for wisdom or vipassana to arise. Then the mind is still whether you sit with your eyes closed or walk around in a busy city. It's like this. Once you were a child. Now you are an adult. Are the child and the adult the same person? You can say that they are, or looking at it another way, you can say that they are different. In this way samatha and vipassana could also be looked at as separate. Or it is like food and feces. Food and feces could be called the same and they can be called different.

Don't just believe what I say, do your practice and see for yourself. Nothing special is needed. If you examine how concentration and wisdom arise, you will know the truth for yourself. These days many people cling to the words. They call their practice vipassana. Samatha is looked down on. Or they call their practice samatha. It is essential to do samatha before vipassana, they say. All this is silly. Don't bother to think about it in this way. Simply do the practice and you'll see for yourself.

The Most Important Thing in Life

The most important thing in life to bring benefit to you and others, including one’s enemy, is to practice Dharma.

于一切善法中

当佛陀游经拘萨罗国的娑罗林时,一位婆罗门居住在离娑罗林不远的地方,有五百个摩纳外道跟随其修习。这位婆罗门经常想:“如果有一天,世尊来到这里,我一定要向他请益,以解开修行中所遇到的困惑。”

这一天,婆罗门派遣摩纳们到娑罗林中捡柴,准备要祭祀火神,他们一进入林中,便看见佛陀端坐在树下,容貌祥和,精神奕奕,宛如一栋光芒赫赫的黄金楼宇。亲睹如来的摩纳们,背起柴枝便赶紧回去禀告婆罗门说:“师父,您一直想见的世尊,正在离我们不远的娑罗林中,若您想去参礼,现在正是时候。”婆罗门一听便动身前往佛所,向佛请益。

婆罗门请示佛陀:“在郁郁茂密的深林当中,常令人感到害怕,为何世尊独自在此禅修,不会感到畏惧?此处也无音乐娱乐身心,为何会喜欢在此独处闲居,修习苦行?何不求作统理世界且自在的大梵天王,或者是掌理天界的帝释天王,您究竟是为了追求什么?”

佛陀回答:“有所执着、有所欲求的人,心中也会有种种的怀疑与困惑,始终在无量无边的境界中,生种种染着。一切的烦恼皆源于没有智慧,我已断除无智根,脱离烦恼结使,所以没有任何希冀欲求,也无谄曲之心,于一切善法中,已清净自在无碍,证得无上菩提道。”

听了佛陀的开示,婆罗门诚挚地赞叹:“我今日至心顶礼,皈依释迦牟尼佛。佛陀已于诸禅定中得大自在,证悟无上正等正觉,实是天上人间之最尊最贵。此外,亦具足三十二相,端正庄严无与伦比,犹如雪山王。世尊虽于深林中得自在解脱,却不会执着于此,而是安住在不生不灭的这念心上,离诸烦恼犹如拔除毒箭。世尊所宣扬的无上妙法,在众论中为第一,于人中师子吼,开示四圣谛法,广度一切有情。不但自身已出离生死大苦,亦救度众生脱离苦恼,悉得清凉安乐。今日有幸值遇天上人间的导师,皈依如来座下,唯有世尊能令一切有情脱离生死此岸,到达涅槃彼岸。”

婆罗门衷心赞叹佛陀之后,欢喜离去。

If You Wish to

If you wish to experience peace, provide peace for another. If you wish to know that you are safe, cause another to know that they are safe. If you wish to better understand seemingly incomprehensible things, help another to better understand. If you wish to heal your own sadness or anger, seek to heal the sadness or anger of another.

Made by Thoughts

Sentient beings, self and others, enemies and dear ones — all are made by thoughts. It is like seeing a rope and mistaking it for a snake. When we think that the rope is a snake, we are scared, but once we see that we are looking at a rope, our fear dissipates. We have been deluded by our thoughts. Likewise, mentally fabricating self and others, we generate attachment and aversion.

造罪知忏悔的阿阇王

提婆达多灭亡以后,阿阇世王并不因他的灭亡而悲哀,反而在他的八识田中,感到这是罪有应得。原来,阿阇世王已逐渐有了悔意。

有一天,阿阇世王在睡梦中见到他的父亲频婆娑罗王微笑着对他说道:"阿阇世!我是你的父亲,你虽然企图杀害我,但我不怨恨你,我是佛陀的弟子,我愿以佛陀的慈悲来原谅你。你终是做过我的儿子,我为你祝福,祝福你早日悔悟,走上光明的正道来。"

阿阇世王醒来很难过,左右思惟父亲的慈爱,想到自己无理的杀害父亲,感到非常的后悔。  
  
有一天,阿阇世王和母亲韦提希夫人共桌吃饭,吃饭的时候,他没有看到儿子优陀耶,就问侍从道:"优陀耶到那里去了?把他找来一起吃饭!"
  
侍从回答说:"优陀耶在和狗一起玩。"
  
侍从把优陀耶叫来的时候,优陀耶的手中还抱了一条小狗,阿阇世王问他道:"你怎么不吃饭呢?"
  
优陀耶撒娇着回答道:"没有同狗在一起我不吃饭。"
  
阿阇世王只得让他去,他们就共在一张桌上吃饭,吃了一会,阿阇世王对母亲韦提希说道:"我是王,为了爱儿子,居然同狗在一起吃饭,这真不好看。"
  
韦提希国太夫人道:"同狗在一起吃饭,这有甚么了不起?吃狗肉的人都有。你现在为了爱儿子和狗在一起吃饭就挖苦起来。其实你的父亲对你,比这更大的事都有,不过你不知道罢了。
  
当你在很小的时候,手指上生出痈来,苦痛万分,日夜都不能睡觉。你的父亲抱着你,把你放在膝上,用口含着你害痈的手指,所以你才能减少痛苦。 有时,因为口里的暖气,你熟了的害痈中流出脓来,你父亲怕惊动你的睡眠,他只得吞下流出的脓,你的父亲是这样的爱你,别人做不到的事,他都做得出来。"
  
阿阇世王听到母亲韦提希夫人这么一说,默默的放下饭碗,站起来,走到邻室去,他从此再也不感觉到王者的荣耀欢乐,他的心中像被一块大大的石头压着。
  
阿阇世王的业报现前,身上又生满很多的痈,心里不时有着悔恨的负担,他就对朝中大臣们道:"现在我的身上和心上都患了重病,一定是由企图杀害父王的罪而起的,谁能替我医治呢?"

大臣中有六师外道月称等,用种种邪教企图说明为国杀父是没有罪业的话来安慰阿阇世王的心,但阿阇世王听他们的话,没有动心,只有加深他的悔恨。

那时名医耆婆前来探病,问道:"大王!现在贵体觉得怎样?"
  
阿阇世王摇头道:"耆婆!我的病很沉重,不但身体上有病,心里的病实在很苦。我想,就是有良医、妙药、咒术,都不能为我治愈的,我日夜睡在床上,忧愁苦闷,呻吟叫喊,不能入睡。耆婆!你虽是天下的名医,这一次怕你也不能救我了。"
  
耆婆很慎重的说道:"大王!你不要这么失望悲伤,现在世界上能救大王的人除了佛陀以外,我想的确是没有第二个人了。"

耆婆说这话的时候,阿阇世王的侍从等颜色大变,他们都怕耆婆触怒王上,但是,阿阇世王这次没有发怒,默默的闭起眼睛,耆婆察知阿阇世王的心就说道:"大王!我是一个医生,医生即使医治身体上的病,但绝不能医治心里上的病。佛陀是无上医王,只要大王肯拜见佛陀,佛陀一定欢迎。佛陀好象无边的大海,他能容纳百川众流,大王的苦,是从心生,要把心上根本的病医好,才能医身上的病。"

阿阇世王点点头说道:"耆婆!你说得很对,我也想去拜见佛陀,不过,我又怕佛陀因我是有罪的人而拒绝,加之我和提婆达多做的事,都很对不起佛陀。"

耆婆知道阿阇世王此刻忏悔的心,所以又再进一步说道:"大王!你的罪,先王在临去世的时候,我听说他已经原谅你,先王是佛陀的弟子,佛陀的弟子都能原谅你,何况众德圆满大悲普济的佛陀呢?

大王!我常听佛陀讲,人若造了罪恶,怀着惭愧的心情,在三宝之前,恳切至诚的忏悔,罪过就可以消除,业障也会减轻。大王虽然一时不智,造了罪业,但照佛陀惭愧忏悔的法门,大王仍然是可以得救。我看大王,现在已知道惭愧忏悔,这就是大王新生的开始。
  
我又听佛陀讲过,有智能的人,他是不敢造罪,就是不慎造罪,以后也知道忏悔;愚痴的人,他是造罪不改,以及造罪覆藏。大王若能到佛陀的座前告白忏悔,表明不敢再犯,佛陀的慈悲之光,一定会庇佑到你。
  
大王!智者不覆藏罪业,佛陀常说,做人要深信因果,深信业报的丝毫不爽,世界上不可救的只有阐提,大王不是阐提,一定能获得佛陀的救济。

佛陀的慈爱无量无边,惠施给一切众生。佛陀是不分冤亲憎爱,贫富贵贱,都是同等的救度。佛陀准许尊贵的跋提王子等出家,但也准许下贱的优波离 出家;佛陀接受富翁须达多长者的供养,但也接受贫穷者的布施;佛陀感化不为欲染的大迦叶加入僧团,但也方便劝贪欲的难陀披剃;鬼子母和鸯崛魔罗,别人听到 名字就怕,而佛陀却去找他们度化,佛陀对什么人,都视同罗侯罗,请大王千万不要再有疑虑!

大王!我讲出来真是恐慌得很,但我又不能不忠实的告诉大王,现在佛陀带领他的弟子一起都到我的梨园中来说法,希望大王速去拜访,把心中的乌云除去,现出朗朗的晴空,这是千载难逢的机会,我恳求大王不要错过!"

阿阇世王听了以后,眼中放出悔改和希望的光彩,对耆婆说道:"我很高兴听到你这番话,请你为我选一个吉日良辰,我一定要前去拜访佛陀,哀求忏悔。"
  
耆婆不以为然的摇头道:"大王!佛陀的教法中,是没有吉日良辰的迷信,佛陀常常教诫诸弟子,不准卜卦占算吉凶。修学正法,依正法而行,什么时候都是吉日良辰,大王最好即刻就起驾动身吧!"

阿阇世王很欢喜,预备很多供养佛陀的东西,带着大队随从,浩浩荡荡的向耆婆的梨园而来。
  
途中,阿阇世王又很恐惧不安,他叫使用大象拉着的车驾暂停,他对耆婆说道:"耆婆!我想到佛陀是离开垢染,有如清净满月的人格,他的僧团中都是断除烦恼的圣人,像我是和提婆达多一类,是佛陀的叛党,他怎么肯接见我这极恶非道的人呢?他怎么肯对我这样的人伸出援救之手呢?我想还是回去吧!"
  
耆婆沉着脸说道:"大王!父母对待子女的爱情是平等的,但多数的父母却特别关怀他有病的儿子;佛陀的慈悲也对一切众生平等看待的,但对有罪的人却会特别的关怀。佛陀对阐提都演说正法,何况大王不是阐提,为什么不能受佛陀的慈悲救济呢?"

阿阇世王犹豫不决,正在此时,空中发出音声:"阿阇世!我是你的父王频婆娑罗,你赶快听信耆婆名医的话,去佛陀的地方哀求忏悔。我现在要告诉你的,就是法灯快要熄灭,法船将要下沉,法树亦 将夭折,法花不久将凋零,佛日一旦西下,佛陀终要进入涅槃。阿阇世!那时你的重病叫谁来救呢?你所犯的五逆重罪,不久就要堕入地狱,我怜愍到你,你是我的 孩子,你赶快到佛陀的地方求救,除了大觉者的佛陀,你生生世世都不能得度!"

阿阇世王听到父亲慈爱的音声,闷绝倒地,醒来时,名医耆婆引导他下车来到佛陀静坐的讲堂之中。佛陀此刻端身正坐在狮子座的上面,四周环绕着弟子,灯火明亮,香烟缭绕,佛陀和弟子们都默默地在坐禅。

阿阇世王洗足入堂,耆婆带着他立在佛陀的座前,他两手放在胸前,说道:"佛陀!请你明察我的心!"
  
佛陀睁开澄清的双眼,慈爱的回答道:"大王!你来得很好,我已等待好久。"
  
阿阇世王受宠若惊,他想要跪下来才好,他惭愧低头说道:"慈悲的佛陀!我是当不起的,像我这样极恶无道的人,能得到佛陀的呵叱就很欢喜,现在反而佛陀对我用这样的爱语,我真感激佛陀。佛陀的大悲,普及一切,我到今天才真正知道。佛陀是我们众生的慈父。我杀害我无罪的父亲,我很后悔,现在身心不安,唯愿佛陀慈悲救济!"
  
佛陀静静的对他说道:"世界上有两种人可以得到快乐和幸福的结果,一是修善不造罪的人,一是造罪知道忏悔的人。现在大王悔过的机缘成熟,过失,世间上的人谁能不犯呢?知过必改,就是一个好人。我的法门是广大无边的,请你时时忏悔就好。

大王!罪业是没有本体,是空幻的,如果能把心意忘去时,罪业也可以消灭了。了解心和罪本是空幻不实,这就是真实的忏悔。

你以后要以法治民,不要行非法的事;要以德化民,不要暴戾。多行仁政,善名美德就可以远播四方,一定受到众人尊敬,想不服从的也不能够。过去 的事已经过去,没有什么计较的必要,从现在起如何自新,才真正的要紧。你行善安心,当即就能快乐,进一步更要在我的法门中学无为的法,证无为的果,你就可 以解脱得度。"

阿阇世王听了佛陀的开示,对新的生命充满希望和信心,他生大欢喜,万有迷妄的乌云扫去,他感激涕零的跪在佛陀的座前。

造罪知忏悔的阿阇世王终于皈依佛陀得救了!

为善要及时

我们应该要时时警惕,知道自己是很渺小的一个人,进而能够敬天畏地,对人有一分尊重与爱;能够如此,才能真正做到大慈无悔、大悲无怨、大喜无忧、大舍无求,慈悲喜舍的人生。

为善要及时,有了因缘,要及时把握,自己懂得利用时间、把握时间、珍惜时间,好好地照顾这一念心,才能回归清净无染的大爱。

Benefiting Animals

It’s not enough that you keep the animals and they give you comfort. You must do something of practical benefit for them.

This is what you can do every day: Take them around holy objects – circumambulate. Everyday you can put on a table many tsa-tsas and statues, and take the animal around chanting mantras at the same time. This way it also helps the person who carries the animal around.

Recite prayers in their ears, verbally, to plant the seed of all the realizations of the path to enlightenment.

This makes a huge difference. It has inconceivable result, unbelievable result. That makes them have a good rebirth next life, to be born as a human being and meet the dharma.
